Li Youling, Street barbecue vendor

Li Youling came to Shenzhen from Chongqing in 1999 and has sold BBQ on the streets ever since. Always on the run, he says, "The authorities catch up with me all the time. I must move from place to place at least once per month to stay in business.” An old rusty bike transports his grills, coal, coolers, and food around the city from his home base in Gangxia. He is currently camped out in front of the Municipal PSB building in downtown Luohu, where the security guards buy meat skewers and doujiao from him every night. At 25 years old, he is the proud father of a new son.
