The BUZZ:

Friends, despite the German origin of its name, the hamburger sandwich is a great American original. What exiled son or daughter of the Land of the Cowboy doesn't remember the thick, juicy patties served at a Greek charbroiler place? Americans, do ya miss In 'n' Out, or Johnny Rockets? Do ya?

And our friends from other countries: What says Amerike, Amrikā, iMelika, or Meiguo like a hamburger? Not a McPuck, but a real honest-to-goodness double-meat double-cheese with a side of fries?

Now look: Mr. Shenzhen is a vegetarian. But he remembers what a real hamburger smells like.

And this is the genuine article.

Not only does the Cowboy serve up all kinds of burgers, but lots of other meats sizzle on the grill (like chicken, lamb, and pork).

And you can wash it down with coffee to satisfy the fussiest tenderfoot, with sissified names like "latte" and "cappuccino."

And also -- and now, we speak with authority, since Mr. Shenzhen does know his way around a potato -- the best French fries we've ever had outside of the states. And better than most in the states. Just 7 rmb for the medium fries and 10 for the
XL.

(UPDATE: Cowboy's now has the ONLY veggie burger in Shenzhen! Just ask. There are also mock meats for the grill. Can't vouch for those, but that burger...mmmm....)

Top it all off with a "howdy" from a real live American cowboy, a fella with a big hat and a ranch. And a sign that reads, "If your smokin' in this barn, you better be on FIRE!"

There. Take the map below and take the time to find it. You'll thank us. (And Scott at Shenzhen Party, who tipped us to it.)

The PLACE:

  • Where: Cowboy's is located at the corner of Shennan Fudao (a frontage road that parallels Shennan one block to the north) and Yongxin streets, in Dongmen. The front door faces east, the side faces south; its south side faces the northeast corner of Baihuo Plaza, that big building with the horseshoe bridge that crosses Shennan. It's on the same street as the front door of Chocolate, a couple of blocks east.
  • By Metro: From Laojie Metro Station, head for Exit A and take the stairs before you enter the bazaar (that's Exit A2). Turn left at the top of the stairs, and follow the street around to the right. Turn left at the shiny 24-hour McDonalds. This is the southwest corner of the Nantang Commercial Square building. Follow the building along to the southeast corner, and you're there.
  • By bus: If you de-bus anywhere on Dongmen Lu, it's probably best to walk down to Shennan. Your landmark is the big horseshoe-shaped bridge over Shennan. Bus riders on Shennan can't miss it. If you face the Baihuo Plaza building at the open end of the horseshoe, walk around it to the right. One short block and you're there.

nice new joint

i met david on the opening night of cowboy's when i was next door eating at a cantonese dessert shop (also recommended). he greeted me with a friendly "howdy" just like you said, and introduced me to his new place. when i came back to eat a week later, i was greeted with an equally friendly hello from toni, and she treated me to a free veg burger which is now on the menu. while not the best veg burger ive ever had, its the only one i know of in shenzhen, and as you say, fries dont get much better than that. its nice that they've added wifi, and the location is hard to beat. definitely a nice new addition to the dining scene for foreigners in shenzhen.
