American Consulate, Guangzhou
From time to time, it may be necessary for you to visit the American Consulate in Guangzhou. This may involve renewing an about-to-expire passport, adding pages to a nearly-full passport, or other services. Remember, you may choose to go to either Guangzhou or Hong Kong for these services.
Registration with the Consulate:
In addition to visiting the consulate, it's a good idea to register your residence (if you live here) or itinerary (if you're visiting). As explained on one State Department website:
Registration at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate ... makes your presence and whereabouts known, in case it is necessary for a consular officer to contact you in an emergency. During a disaster overseas, American consular officers can assist in evacuation were that to become necessary. But they cannot assist you if they do not know where you are.
Americans visiting or residing in Shenzhen can register in both Hong Kong and Guangzhou to keep up with issues on both sides of the river.
Start here; at the next screen, you'll create a User ID, and can then go on to register at both consulates.
The Guangzhou Consulate, American Citizen Services (ACS):
"IMPORTANT NOTE: The American Citizen Services unit cannot answer questions concerning visas."

How to get to Guangzhou:
You can take a bus to Guangzhou, but the train service is fast and comfortable, and puts you very near the consulate.
Go to the KCR station at Luohu; buy a ticket for Guangzhou EAST Station (not Guangzhou main). Price will be 75-80 yuan. Trains leave frequently, and the trip takes about one hour. From the station to the consulate is a five-minute walk.
How to get to the Consulate:
From Guangzhou EAST train station, walk out Exit F and turn left. Turn right on Linhe Zhong Lu, and follow along the left side of the road. Just past the "Deluxe Restaurant," and before the Westin Hotel, is the Tian Yu Garden (II phase) building.
Proceed up the escalators to the 5th floor. It's a bit of a labyrinth, and along the way you'll need to show your passport. Then, at the security check, you'll have to surrender ALL electronics (including cameras and
telephones). We recommend traveling as light as possible.
Note: You may find some information online regarding a consulate on Shamian Island, far from the Guangzhou East station. This is still the main consulate office (and mailing address), but all Citizen Services are now provided at the Tianhe location.
